Scientists are studying ways to come up with a reliable test for driving under the influence of marijuana as more states legalize the drug for medical and recreational use, NBC4 media partner KPCC reports.
But some scientists admit they are having a hard time studying marijuana because the drug is still considered illegal under federal law.
The news comes as police still don't have the equivalent of a reliable alcohol breathalyzer or blood test โ a chemically based way of estimating what the drug is doing in the brain, the radio station reported.
A test that can detect some of marijuana's components does exist, but there is no widely accepted standardized amount in the breath or blood that gives police or courts or anyone else a good sense of who is impaired, the radio station reported.
