One of the largest universities in San Diego County has been named one of the "coolest" schools in the nation.
UC San Diego was ranked 17 on Sierra Magazine's "coolest schools" list.
The magazine honored the school with a Top 20 mention because of its deep and thorough commitment to protecting the environment, addressing climate issues and encouraging environmental responsibility.
The campus touts that dozens of its structures on campus use solar panels to generate energy. In addition, more than a dozen buildings are LEED certified according to the university.
The 30,000 or so students at UC San Diego can add "coolest" to the "happiest" distincton the university earned from a study released just last year.
